1855<$2 1/2> MS66 PCGS. This issue is common in the various circulated grades, and relatively plentiful in the lowest Mint State grades. Gem quality examples, on the other hand, are extremely rare and almost non-existent. This single coin is the only example PCGS has graded better than MS65. With the exception of the eagle's right leg, to the viewer's left, this example is sharply struck. All of Liberty's hair details are fully defined, as are each and every star. Aside from the aforementioned leg of the eagle, the reverse is similarly well detailed. The surfaces of this example display attractive yellow coloration with wisps of pink. Both the obverse and the reverse have reflective fields, presenting a cameo appearance. Overall, this is an exceptional 1855 Quarter Eagle, an important coin for the specialist, or for the type collector who prefers to select important numismatic delicacies. Past pedigree of this example is not known at this time; however, it shouldn't be too hard to determine. As a hint, it is easy to believe that this lovely Gem may have been described as a Proof, or in B. Max Mehl's words, a Semi-Proof. While it is clearly a business strike, past catalogers sometimes took liberties with their descriptions that are not acceptable today.
