1855<1C> Upright 5s MS65 Red PCGS. N-4, R.1. A pair of tiny die lumps below Liberty's ear confirms the die marriage. Each side is awash in relatively bright mint orange luster, and most of the design elements are sharply struck. The only notable weakness is in the star centers, particularly those of stars 3 through 10. The surfaces are devoid of significant contact marks. Minor spots are present on both sides, as nearly always on full red large cents from this era. Grellman, in his 2001 book The Die Varieties of United States Large Cents, 1840-1857, indicates that many Choice and Gem Mint State pieces of the N-4 variety come from a large hoard.
