1855<$10> Wass Molitor Ten Dollar AU58 NGC. Kagin-6, R.5. This had been a very elusive variety, but about 40 pieces were recovered from the S.S. Central America shipwreck, which was very significant discovery as about ten were known prior to these additional coins coming to market. The final digit was apparently drilled out of the die (a 2 for 1852), and was replaced with a 5. There is now a circular mark surrounding the second 5 and this is present on all examples of this die pairing. As far as we can recall, this is the only example of a die being drilled out in this fashion and having a new digit or device replaced. The dies were dished and warn, and hence several of the obverse stars are weak, but very little actual wear is seen on the uppermost curls of Liberty. Moderate handling marks reside over the surfaces including a small edge void above the third star, and on the reverse we note a minor reeding mark just touching the back of the eagle's head. Despite the group recovered from the S.S. Central America, these remain elusive and collectors have few opportunities to obtain one so close to mint condition. The combined NGC and PCGS Population reports show two coins graded this high with just two more examples graded finer (6/05). Listed on page 304 of the 2005 Guide Book.
