1855 $1 PR66 NGC. Perhaps 50 to 60 proofs survive from an unknown mintage, according to Walter Breen in his Proof Encyclopedia and his Complete Encyclopedia. Other observers suggest a smaller population. Dave Bowers writes of a different experience in his Silver Dollar Encyclopedia, "I believe that fewer were coined and fewer exist today than of the 1854." Bowers continued with an estimate that fewer than 30 to 40 silver proof sets were minted during the year. In addition to these sets, a number of individual proof dollars were coined during the year.
Two different die pairs were utilized for the small mintage, combining a single obverse die with two reverse dies. One reverse was also used for the 1854 proof dollars. The new 1855 reverse appears on this Premium Gem, with the leftmost "white space" in the shield fully polished and mirrored. All remaining spaced between the vertical stripes are filled and unpolished. Each of these filled spaces have microscopic vertical die lines. Dave Bowers noted a similar feature on the Floyd Starr specimen, lot 599 in Stack's October 1992 sale of that collection, although he did not mention the source for his information in the Silver Dollar Encyclopedia. The actual Starr catalog makes no such mention.
Splendid cameo contrast is created by lustrous devices and deep mirrors beneath impressive lilac, steel, and blue toning. This example and an NGC PR66 Cameo are the two finest pieces certified. Census: 1 in 66, 0 finer (7/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information\)
