1855 1/2 C PR66 Brown NGC. C-1, B-1, the only known dies, R.5 as a proof. The existence of only one die marriage for the proof 1855 half cent suggests that the entire mintage was actually produced during that year. We do not know exactly how many specimens were delivered, but Breen (1983) estimates that only 35-40 coins are extant. This richly toned, glossy brown example reveals some rose and green undertones at direct angles. Crisply impressed, both sides are free of mentionable post-production features. There are, however, several interesting as made features on the obverse, including a die crack and several lengthy striations extending, respectively, from beneath star 1 and just right of the date to the rim near stars 11 and 12. The highest-graded example at either NGC or PCGS. Census: 1 in 66, 0 finer at either service (11/06).
