1855<1/2 C> PR65 Red and Brown NGC. Ex: Pittman Collection. B-1, C-1, the only known dies, R.5. The existence of only one die marriage for the proof 1855 Half Cent suggests that then entire mintage was actually achieved during that year. We do not know exactly how many specimens were delivered, but Breen (1983) estimates that only 35-40 coins are extant. This lightly toned, brick-red and tan example reveals some steel-blue muting on the reverse. Crisply impressed, both sides are free of mentionable post-production features. There is, however, an interesting lintmark in the obverse field just above Liberty's hair bun. A tiny lateral abrasion is detected in the field near star 11, this being listed only as a pedigree identifier.
