1855 1/2 C PR64 Brown NGC. B-1, C-1, the only known dies, R.5. The existence of only one die marriage for the proof 1855 Half Cent suggests that then entire mintage was actually achieved during that year. We do not know exactly how many specimens were delivered, but Breen (1983) estimates that only 35-40 coins are extant. This richly toned, glossy brown example reveals some steel-blue and orange-red undertones at direct angles. Crisply impressed, both sides are free of mentionable post-production features. There are, however, several interesting lintmarks (as produced) on the obverse, the largest of which originates at the border outside star 2 and terminates in the field between stars 6 and 7 after passing over the front of Liberty's portrait. We last offered a similarly graded proof 1855 Half Cent as lot 5106 in our September 2002 Long Beach Signature Sale. That coin, certified by PCGS, realized $3,680.
