1854 By "Unknown Maker B," perhaps Auguste Dubois and his associate John Waschwald or John Oswald, struck by them in a secret room in the cellar of a house on the southeast corner of Green and Fayette Streets in San Francisco with all the windows "stained" except one. (See Lot 154 for the half dollar by this maker, with additional details.) Or perhaps not. In any case, Very Rare. And very popular because of the Eagle reverse type.
faceLarge head with Roman nose, 13 stars around; eagle without scroll (!), CALIFORNIA GOLD 1854 above, * ONE DOL * below. (Local imitation of BG-504; see Lot 158.) Reverse rotated 45°. A clad coin; the Jay Roe specimen was tested and found to have a core of 83% gold, 15% silver, and about 2% copper (approximately 20k), plated with a higher-purity alloy of 93% gold, 5% silver, and about 2% copper (22+k). Practically no wear on obverse, mottled coppery patina; reverse lustrous, also coppery toning, with some yellow gold color apparent at lower left. PCGS AU55. This is another tough coin to grade. The obverse has a weak strike, as does the left side of the reverse, yet the right side eagle feathers have sharp detail. The photo of the Roe coin is nearly identical, though the hair bun on this coin shows little or no wear.
