1854 Same head, date below, 10 stars around, 5th star normal size and pointing towards rim, 2nd star normal, 1 of 1854 virtually touching bust, no rust pits above coronet; same reverse die. Discovered by Mark Van Winkle in 1993, but reported to be a mule with the obverse of BG-306 and the reverse of BG-305; when working on the second edition of California Pioneer Fractional Gold, the writer (RDL) recognized that this is in fact struck from a different die: this is its only appearance. Unique. Plate Coin, second edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold. Brilliant Uncirculated, lightly toned. Like other Frontier Deviercy products, struck on a clad planchet, with finer gold laminated over a baser core. On this example, the outer cladding has bubbled between stars 9 and 10 on the obverse and before G on the reverse, with loss of cladding exposing a "brownish purple core" at the letter G itself. PCGS MS61. Note: Jack Totheroh listed this in his collection as BG-306A, prior to the publication of the second edition of Breen-Gillio. Ex Robert Lecce 9/12/1993 by private treaty, ex Heritage ANA Baltimore 7/31/1993. Not in the Roe Collection. Serial# 26703320 Totheroh Collection HKA#63525
