Three-Cent Silver 1854 Type 2. PCGS graded Mint State 65. <b>Splendid heavy white frost beneath original pale to medium neutral gray "antique" toning. This design features a triple outline around the star; in 1859 one of these is removed producing the Type 3. Scarce in all grades. It is often the case that certain coins come into being through political means instead of as a means to satisfy a need from the public. The Three-cent Silver coins were designed to be our first "subsidiary" coins. That is, they contain less than full value, in metal, of their face amount -- breaking a long-held tradition whereby even mundane coins made from base metals were supposed to yield close to their true value in metallic content. Those who read the public's mood were correct since these were eagerly accepted at full value and circulated widely although the denomination was cancelled in 1873.</b> <p align="center">Superior Galleries was founded in 1929 and has been a leader in
