1854-S G$1 MS65 PCGS. Formerly offered as lot 7642 in our 2001 Central States Sale, where it was described as, "As an issue, the 1854-S is a paradox. In lower grades it is highly touted as the only S-mint Type One gold dollar, and its scarcity is often overstated. However, at the Gem level it is virtually ignored by specialists, undoubtedly because its extreme rarity at this level prevents it from being promoted. This is a rock-solid Gem BU. The lustrous surfaces show a bit of mellow reddish patina and are virtually unscathed. Also, the striking details are razor sharp in all areas." Only four pieces have been so graded by both of the major services (10/02), but none have been certified in a higher grade. The coin brought an impressive $16,675 in that sale a year and a half ago. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment.
