1854-S<$20> MS64 NGC. Ex: S.S. Central America. Open A in STATES. The Philadelphia Mint struck both Large and Small Date varieties in 1854. The San Francisco Mint, however, used only Small Date dies for its first year of production. The 1854-S quarter eagle and half eagle are great rarities, while the gold dollar, eagle, and double eagle are scarce but collectible. Thousands of double eagles came from the famous S.S. Central America shipwreck hoard, but most of these were dated the same as the year of the shipwreck, 1857. The 1854-S is much scarcer in Uncirculated condition, and only a handful of such pieces achieve the relatively high grade of MS64. This fully lustrous near-Gem has a gorgeously smooth reverse. The cheek and left obverse field show only light grazes. The strike is sharp, and the peach-gold coloration is attractive.
From The Groth Family Collection.
