1854-S<$20> MS63 PCGS. The surviving examples of this issue come from three sources: from the original mintage, which accounts for a "few hundred" of the specimens known today, according to Bowers' double eagle reference; from the steamship Yankee Blade, which foundered in heavy fog, en route from San Francisco to Panama, off the California coast on Oct. 1, 1854, and from which specimens were recovered in 1977; and from the S.S. Central America, which sank in 1857 and which yielded about 20 specimens of the 1854-S from beneath the waves when the Columbus-America Discovery Group uncovered its treasure in the 1980s. The present example shows satiny, highly lustrous yellow-gold surfaces with a few light, grade-consistent abrasions. The strike is bold and pleasing, although several small die cracks are visible with a loupe near the reverse periphery. This is an exemplary, enormously eye-appealing, and historic coin from the rough-and-tumble Gold Rush days in San Francisco. Population: 19 in 63, 4 finer (1/06).
