1854-S $20 AU50 NGC. The San Francisco Mint struck twenties each year from 1854 through 1907, with the exception of an unexplained interruption in 1886. Not counting the 1866-S No Motto subtype and the 1861-S Paquet Reverse, the 1854-S boasts the lowest recorded mintage in the entire Liberty double eagle series. And of the 141,468 pieces struck in that inaugural year in San Francisco, the vast majority of the coins were released into circulation. There was also a significant hoard of high grade pieces that were salvaged in the 1970s. These coins show matte-like surfaces from the abrasive action of sea water, unlike this coin. Light friction is seen over the highpoints and there is a significant presence of mint luster around the devices. Lightly abraded with the most obvious marks located in the field to the right of the date.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
