1854<S$1> XF40 ICG. The rarity of this issue is attributed by Bowers in his book Silver Dollars and Trade Dollars of the United States to exports to China and to meltings. He indicates that in 1861 there were very heavy meltings of dollars, especially from the 1850s, to provide bullion for subsidiary silver coinage. In just one case, 40,000 silver dollars were melted at Philadelphia. He says other meltings were probably well in excess of this. The current piece has light to medium gray patina, and the design elements are well defined. A few minute, unobtrusive marks on Liberty's figure and in the fields of both sides do not distract.
