AU50 Details. David Bowers (1993) writes that circulated 1854 dollars are few and far between today. He attributes this rarity to their being used in overseas trade, particularly China. Also, many dollars of the 1850s were possibly among the 40,000 melted at the Mint in 1861 to provide bullion for subsidiary silver. This specimen reveals fine hairlines on bright light gray surfaces that are imbued with traces of sky-blue. Sharp detail is retained on the motifs. A few light marks are scattered over each side, including a toned-over pinscratch on Liberty's neck.
From The Steve Glenn Collection, Part Two.
