1854 Same obverse die; similar reverse, with date changed to 1854. A further Deriberpie issue. Only 3 known (1. This Example; 2. Mickey Sehorn Collection [not Seyhorn, as given in error in Breen-Gillio], an Oklahoma dentist; and 3. ANS 0000.999.30180), 1 of which is impounded in the ANS Collection. This is the Finest of the three specimens, and the only coin graded uncirculated by PCGS. Plate Coin, second edition, Breen-Gillio, California Pioneer Fractional Gold. In the Jay Roe catalog, Ron Guth wrote, "Rich honey gold with deep yellow highlights and strong underlying lustre. A pleasing coin for the assigned grade, perhaps just a hint of brightness from a much higher designation." We would also note a patch of light blue patina highlighting the denomination. PCGS MS60. Ex Bowers and Merena Jay Roe 9/14/2003, Lot 82, ex Jay Roe Collection; ex Ronald Gillio 6/18/1984 by private treaty; ex Bowers and Merena Brand I 11/7-8/1983, Lot 819 (as BG-423); ex Brand heirs; ex Virgil Brand; ex DeWitt Smith Collection 1908 (collected 1890-1908)--a pedigree extending back more than a century, during which time this coin has resided in only four collections: DeWitt Smith, Virgil Brand (and Brand estate), Jay Roe, and Jack Totheroh. Yours will be the fifth in the chain! Serial# 60022040 Totheroh Collection HKA#63580
