1854 Pattern 1C. J-160 PCGS PF65 BR
1854 Pattern Cent. Copper, plain edge. PCGS graded Proof 65 Brown. Glossy chocolate brown with faded mint red in protected areas, especially on the reverse. No spots, stains, or contact marks. The fields are nicely reflective, the reverse a bit more than the obverse. Die clashmarks show clearly on both sides. The diameter is 25mm versus the 28mm diameter for regular issue 1854 Large Cents. The weight is 96.1 grains versus the 168 grains standard. These smaller pattern cents were designed to help combat the rise in the price of copper, which had risen so much by this time that a 168-grain large cent contained more than a cent’s-worth of copper. Our grade is Proof-62. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 8; none finer in Proof Brown at PCGS. DWH #2241 (PCGS # 11659) .
Estimated Value $1,000-UP.

Provenance: Ex Tony Terranova 3/13/2003.
