<B>1854-O<H10C> Arrows MS67 NGC.</B></I> For many reasons this is an exciting and desirable coin. First, the quality is exquisite. Both sides have full frosty mint luster beneath blue-green, amber, and iridescent toning. The strike is sharp with full head details, strong star definition, and completely formed leaves. It is a late die state of the obverse with prominent clash marks and die cracks. The reverse has a light die crack through the right side of E in UNITED, but otherwise appears perfect. This is an important, short-lived design variation, with the arrows next to the date, signifying the weight reduction that was authorized by the Mint Act of February 1853. This design variation was utilized for only three years from 1853 to 1855. The New Orleans Mint was the only branch facility to produce this design, and while the mintage was not small, it was substantially less than at Philadelphia. The main mint struck just over 20 million of these coins during the three year period, while New Orleans only coined a little over 4 million pieces during the same period. The combination of all of these factors, along with the coins exceptional aesthetic appeal, create a most important opportunity for the connoisseur. Census: 2 in 67, 0 finer (12/05).
