1854-O<$5> MS63 NGC. Rich apricot color endows the centers of this high grade New Orleans No Motto Half Eagle. Uncommonly free from marks, the right obverse field has a bulge which upon evaluation proves to be a minor lamination, as made. Luster is abundant, and the strike is reasonable, with some softness on the curl below the ear and on the eagle's neck feathers. The dies are moderately rotated. As is the case for many dates within the No Motto series, the 1854-O has a lower mintage than its Dahlonega Mint counterpart, but the latter is more costly, especially in circulated grades. Only 46,000 pieces were struck, most of which are in XF and AU grades. Census: 2 in 63, 0 finer (10/05).
From The Frank Manthey Collection of Gold Coins.
