1854-O $3 XF45 PCGS. The 1854-O three dollar is a popular issue with collectors. However, finding a presentable example can be a formidable challenge. Douglas Winter comments in his Gold Coins of the New Orleans Mint: "Most are well worn and show poor strikes. The majority have been cleaned and show unappealing color and dull luster." Winter estimates the total population of 1854-O three dollar gold pieces in all grades at 400-500+, out of an original mintage of 24,000 coins, making the acquisition of this coin difficult in any condition. The design details are surprisingly strong for an XF. There are, however, a number of surface flaws including a couple of shallow scratches through the O in OF, and several planchet flaws (most on the reverse). Struck from an advanced state of the dies with the die crack on the lower reverse especially pronounced.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
