<B>1854-O $3 AU53 NGC.</B></I> The inaugural year of the three dollar gold piece, 1854, was the only year that the New Orleans Mint struck coins of this denomination. Three dollar gold pieces dated 1854 also have the distinction of being a one-year subtype, as DOLLARS on the reverse is much smaller than found on all subsequent issues. For these reasons, the 1854-O three dollar is a popular issue with collectors. Yellow-gold surfaces are imbued with tints of light green, and exhibit traces of luster in the recessed areas. Good definition is apparent on the design elements.
