According to <I>Cherrypickers'</B></I>, this popular Guide Book variety features a "very large, extremely thick ... and most irregular" New Orleans mintmark. Likely, the mintmark was engraved by hand onto the reverse die, similar to what was done for various rare 1870-S denominations. A nicely defined lavender-gray representative with a hint of verdigris in design recesses.
