1854-O<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Despite a relatively high coinage of 1854 quarter eagles, the New Orleans mint took great care with these coins. The '54-O is one of the more sharply defined quarter eagles from this Southern branch mint, and the present example is no exception. All features save for the eagle's right claw and left (facing) leg feathers are boldly detailed, and the surfaces are overlaid in rich, green-gold mint frost. A few wispy obverse die cracks meander through the stars. The 1854-O is one of the more common O-mint quarter eagles in grades up to and including AU58. Yet Breen calls it "extremely rare in Unc.," and Winter (1992) suggests that only 10-12 Mint State coins exist. The 1854-O quarter eagle becomes truly scarce in properly graded MS62 and it is actually quite rare in MS63. The NGC Census Report shows six coins in MS62, with five finer, while PCGS reports six specimens in MS62, with seven finer (10/05).
