1854-O<$10> Large Date MS61 PCGS. This early New Orleans Mint eagle comes is both Large and Small Date varieties. The present example is the interesting Large Date variety, which Walter Breen stated is unknown in Mint State, although a small number of such coins have been identified since his Complete Encyclopedia was published in 1988. This issue is almost always found weakly struck through the centers, and this coin is no exception. There is weakness on the neck and central hair curls, while the reverse shows weakness on the shield and nearby feathers. But moving outward from the center, the hair above Liberty's forehead is pleasingly well detailed, as are the coronet and the hair and cords behind. Most of the stars show their centrils, even though they are not full. On the reverse, the details below the shield are surprisingly full. This example shows somewhat subdued but full and unbroken mint luster, with absolutely no trace of rub over the highpoints. The color is medium-gold, with a transparent wash of darker toning in the obverse protected areas. An attractive and nearly unimprovable specimen. Population: 1 in 61, 1 finer (11/05).
