1854 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown.
1854 N-9 R2 PCGS graded MS63 Brown. The "Dartboard Obverse" Variety. Lustrous light olive with sea-green overtones. Hines of very faded mint color are bleeding through in a few places on the reverse. The only notable mark is a spot of lighter brown toning right of the E in ONE. Nicely struck MDS, die state c. The fields are starting to show fine radial die flowlines and the clashmarks at the throat and inner curl are clear. The strike is above average for the variety, especially at the ear. The stray 1 imbedded in the right side of the ear is clear, as is the top of the 8 in the hollow right of the Y. Why these numerals were punched so far from the date position remains a mystery (although rum rations or worker boredom have been offered as possibilities). Whatever the cause, this is a nice example with stronger than normal evidence of the "Dartboard" feature. Our grade is MS60+, tied for CC#5 in the Grellman census. The attribution is noted on the PCGS label. Pop 1; none finer at PCGS in BN.
Estimated Value $200-UP.
