1854 N-9 R2 Dartboard Obverse MS62+.
1854 N-9 R2 Dartboard Obverse MS62+. Lustrous dark bluish steel brown and light olive with faded mint red remaining in protected areas, especially on the obverse. No spots, stains, or contact marks. A tiny planchet void on the rim just below star 2 is the best identifying mark. Would rate a choice grade except for a shallow low spot that covers the cheek with another one over NT in CENT. These low spots are caused by debris on the dies and are nearly always present to some degree on this die variety. Otherwise this cent is sharply struck. E-MDS, die state b. The dies are strongly clashed but the fields are smooth and the stray numerals punched into the portrait and right side of the ear (the "Dartboard" error) are clear. CC#3 for this popular variety in the Grellman census. Removed from an NGC slab graded MS64BN (NGC label included, and it shows the attribution and Reiver provenance). DWH #3015.
Estimated Value $300-UP.
