1854 N-12 R6 (as a proof) Repunching Below 1
1854 N-12 R6 (as a proof) Repunching Below 1. PCGS graded Proof 64 Red & Brown. Steel brown with delicate hints of bluish steel overtones and faded mint red covering the fields, about 50% remaining on the obverse and 10% on the reverse. The fields are nicely reflective and the mirrors are moderate to deep in spite of some extremely faint hairlines. The only significant defect is a small spot of darker toning on the upper edge of the bust, and this spot is very lightly abraded. The additional identifying marks are a tiny curved struck-through line at the right tip of star 1, a small carbon spot on the rim at ED, and a small nick-like rim chip on the edge at the second T in STATES (as struck). Called Proof-64 and finest known in the Denis Loring census. Our grade is Proof-64, tied for CC#1 honors in the Grellman census of proof strikes. A very attractive large cent and an unquestioned proof strike. And it comes with an impressive list of prior owners. The attribution and Dan Holmes provenance are noted on the PCGS label. PCGS population 2; none finer in Proof Red & Brown at PCGS for the variety. DWH #1870 (PCGS # 400592) .
Estimated Value $4,000-UP.
