HENRY WELLS & WILLIAM FARGO. Wells, Fargo, & Company was formed in 1852 by the merger of companies owned by HENRY WELLS (1805-1878), American Express operator, the founder and President of the American Express Co. (served 1850-68); and WILLIAM GEORGE FARGO, (1818-1881), Amencan Express owner, Secretary of the American Express Co. after the merger of Wells & Company with two other express concerns (served as President from 1868-81 after larger merger). Fargo organizes Wells, Fargo & Company to handle express business between New York and California (1852).
September 30, 1854-Dated, Partially-Printed Document Signed, by both Henry Wells & William Fargo, measuring 6.5" x 11", Choice Extremely Fine. Stock Certificate, one share of the American Express Company numbered "1143" to Mrs. E.E.G. Emerson. Signed, "Wm. E. Fargo" and "Henry Wells" at the lower edge, and countersigned by Treasurer Alex Holland. This is the much scarcer style Stock Certificate form.
