1854 H10C Arrows PR64 PCGS. Ex: Benson. Pre-1859 proofs are rare and always in demand among specialists. Perhaps no issues from this period enjoy greater popularity than the specimen strikings of the 1853-1855 Arrows coinage. The second year that Arrows were present at the date of the Seated Liberty Half Dime, 1854 witnessed the production of an unknown, although presumably limited number of proofs at the Philadelphia Mint. NGC and PCGS have seen only 23 examples in all grades (10/02), some of which may represent resubmissions of the same coin. The present example is veiled in dove-gray patina through which moderate reflectivity and champagne-gold undertones shine at select angles. A thin strike through (as made, and perhaps from a piece of wire) is seen on the reverse below the M in DIME, but we can find no outwardly distracting handling marks. The devices are fully brought up in all areas from an obviously powerful impression. This lovely example traded hands for $10,925 as lot 403 in Larry and Ira Goldberg's February 2002 sale of the Benson Collection. From the Trane Collection.
