1854 H10C Arrows PR63 NGC. Among early proof half dime
1854 H10C Arrows PR63 NGC. Among early proof half dimes, this is an extremely important issue, representing the first of two reasonably available proof issues of this With Arrows design type. The true first year of issue coins, dated 1853, are common in Mint State grades. As proofs, they are extremely rare, if they exist at all. In fact, all proof coins of that date are extremely rare. A larger number were produced in 1854, and in the case of half dimes perhaps 40 or 50 pieces is a reasonable estimate of the mintage. At the time, Mint records did not mention proof coins, thus the actual mintage is unknown. This example, with its slight reflectivity, does not look like most proofs at first glance; however, careful inspection shows that the light gray surfaces do retain characteristics of proof coins from this period. The real authentication factor is the extremely sharp strike, perhaps as full as any we have seen. This example is also from the same obverse die as the Gem Eliasberg proof, with the serif of the digit 1 extended to the left, almost touching the arrow shaft. Light gray patina covers each side.

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
