1854 H10C Arrows MS66 NGC. The mintage of the 1854 Arr
<B>1854<H10C> Arrows MS66 NGC.</B></I> The mintage of the 1854 Arrows half dime was 5.74 million pieces, a tremendous number of coins and unprecedented except for the previous year's output. This stepped-up production, of course, was initiated to place these coins in circulation, something that was spotty at best prior to the Mint Act of 1853. A relatively large number of examples were set aside as curiosities, as they had a noticeable design difference with the arrowheads at each side of the date. However, there are far fewer high grade examples than collectors of high grade 19th century type. This is especially true at the MS66 grade level. Only 14 other pieces have been so graded by NGC with a mere three coins in higher grade (none are finer at PCGS). This piece has snow-white surfaces and thick mint frost that immediately grabs the viewer's attention. Die erosion around the margins gives the coin a matte-like appearance also. Essentially perfect surfaces with the only flaw being slight striking softness over the A in HALF on the reverse.
