1854[G$1] Type Two MS66 NGC.
1854<G$1> Type Two MS66 NGC. Generally only located in AU or lower grades, any Mint State Type Two Gold Dollar is a significant coin, but in Gem condition it is also a major condition rarity and worthy of consideration by advanced collectors. The surfaces on this piece are smooth and unblemished with the only ripple in the fabric of the coin being the usually-seen die clash marks on each side. Thick, frosted mint luster rolls across each side and there is a considerable presence of reddish patina. Also fully struck throughout with complete definition on Liberty's hair curls, the coronet, and the date. An outstanding Type Two Gold Dollar. Population: 7 in 66, 3 finer (4/04).
Upon his appointment to the post of Mint Director in 1853, James Ross Snowden enacted plans to modify the Gold Dollar that James B. Longacre had executed in 1849. While Longacre faithfully increased the diameter of the denomination from 13 to 15 millimeters and reduced the thickness proportionately, he seized upon the opportunity to redesign both the obverse and reverse devices. The Treasury Department adopted the new design, coinage began on August 19, 1854. Unfortunately, the Mint soon realized the new design's ill-fated beauty. The relief of the obverse motif was too high and Longacre positioned it directly opposite the highest points of the reverse. This created poor metal flow into the die cavities and even the faultless Philadelphia mint could not produce fully struck examples. Most pieces emerged from the mint with weak devices and rapidly wore down to illegibility. The barely identifiable survivors retrieved from circulation were melted down as hastily as they had been designed. After two years of production at Philadelphia and token outputs at the branch mints that extended into 1856, Longacre completely reworked the denomination and created the Type Three Gold Dollar.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids.
