1854 G$1 Type Two MS64 PCGS. The failure of the d
1854<G$1> Type Two MS64 PCGS. The failure of the design modifications that accounted for the Type Two gold dollar were noticed almost immediately as the coins quickly wore down to illegibility. Soon after minting, banks were under orders to return the small-sized dollars to the Mint or New York Subtreasury. By 1861, some eight million of the original 11 million pieces that had been produced had been returned, melted, and recoined into Type Three gold dollars, quarter eagles, and double eagles. This is a particularly bright, lustrous, and vibrant survivor that is strongly struck in the centers. There are virtually no marks of note on either side, the only ripple in the fabric of the coin being the usually-seen die clash marks on each side.
