1854<G$1> Type Two MS64 PCGS. It is thought by some numismatists that James Longacre was neither a competent engraver nor one with much imagination. His modified head for the Type Two gold dollar was a design that he used in various versions of U.S. coinage, in no fewer than 15 variations, from the Indian cent to double eagle. The Type Two gold dollar most closely resembles the three dollar gold piece in immediacy of design. Issues were brief and limited, but apparently the public noticed enough differences between the previous design and this one that numerous high grade examples were set aside.
The weakness of detail that this issue is widely known for is conspicuously absent on this lovely near Gem example, though portions of Liberty's hair are soft. Additionally, the surfaces display vivid peach-gold coloration and vibrant luster. Just a few minor handling marks are noted on the reverse. Each side exhibits the usual die clashing that is common to almost all gold dollars of this type.
