1854 G$1 Type Two MS63 NGC. When James Ross Snowd
1854<G$1> Type Two MS63 NGC. When James Ross Snowden became Mint Director in 1853, one of his first priorities was to refurbish the nation's coinage. One of the first coins to receive attention from Snowden was the gold dollar. The diameter was slightly increased and the design was a rough copy of the three dollar gold piece. However, Longacre's design was faulty and central striking weakness is seen on most Type Two gold dollars. This piece is the exception to that rule and Liberty's hair and all the digits in the date are fully brought up. Light die clashing is seen in the obverse fields, as usual, but we do not see any evidence of clash marks on the reverse. A few light field marks explain the grade, and bright mint luster is present over each side with an overlay of light reddish patina.
