1854-D G$1 MS62 NGC. Winter 6-H, the only known dies. Writing in 1965, Walter Breen stated that only 25-30 1854-D Gold Dollars are extant from a miniscule original mintage of 2,935 pieces. The actual number of survivors is closer to 75-85 pieces (per Winter, 1997), but this does not change the fact that the '54-D is a rare coin that is always in demand among advanced specialists. This date ranks fourth in overall rarity among D-mint Gold Dollars after the 1855-D, 1856-D, and 1861-D, and third in high grade rarity after only the 1855-D and 1856-D. Since AU55 and AU58 survivors qualify for Condition Census standing (again, per Winter), the present BU representative also qualifies for this coveted distinction. We have offered the following MS62 examples over the past ten years: 1. Ex: Long Beach Signature Sale (Heritage, 2/1999), lot 6109. Bidding on this NGC-certified specimen reached $12,200. 2, Ex: 1999 Chicago ANA Signature Sale--The Chestatee Collection (Heritage, 8/1999), lot 7624, where it realized $13,800. A PCGS example. 3. Ex: FUN Signature Sale (Heritage, 1/2000), lot 7557, where it realized $11,500. The present example, and identifiable by an obverse abrasion before the star at 12 o'clock and a reverse planchet void (as struck) below the first S in STATES. 4. Ex: 2001 Atlanta ANA Signature Sale (Heritage, 8/2001), lot 7555, where it realized $9,200. Certified by NGC.The present example displays lovely golden-rose color over satiny surfaces. The diagnostic die scratches (as produced) are evident on both sides, particularly on the reverse around the D mintmark, and the striking bluntness over the lower left reverse is also characteristic of the issue. There are a few moderate distractions in the lower left obverse field, but the eye appeal is above average for the MS62 grade level and extraordinary for a survivor of this often worn and/or impaired date. From the Ashland City Collection.
