<B>1854-D G$1 MS61 NGC.</B></I> Variety 6-H. Ex: Browning. Writing in 1965, Walter Breen stated that only 25-30 1854-D gold dollars are extant from a minuscule mintage of 2,935 pieces. The actual number of survivors is closer to 75-85 pieces (per Winter, 1997), but this does not change the fact that the '54-D is among the rarest issues for the denomination and is always in demand among advanced specialists. The diagnostic die scratches (as produced) are evident on both sides, particularly on the reverse around the D mintmark, and the moderate striking weakness over the centers and the lower left reverse is also characteristic of the issue. Careful scrutiny of the surfaces reveals a handful of small marks, located in the right obverse field, directly behind Liberty's hair bun; but no additional blemishes that would limit the grade or provide pedigree markers. However, the mint luster is slightly muted, and this prevents a higher grade designation, according to the strict standards of NGC.
