1854-D G$1 --Damaged--ANACS. AU55 Details. Variety 6-H. The "damage" comes in the form of about three scratches on each side of the 1 on the reverse. These scratches are deep enough to move metal, but none of them extends below the tops of DOLLAR, and they are difficult to see without magnification. Beyond that, there are numerous small abrasions consistent with the grade, the most prominent a few ticks before the coronet. The patch of heavy, raised die scratches to the left of the D mintmark is diagnostic. Subdued mint luster remains on both sides, and the strike is a bit better than typical. As Doug Winter writes in Gold Coins of the Dahlonega Mint 1838-1861 (2nd. ed., 1997), this date is very rare in the higher AU grades, estimating that 15-19 AU pieces exist from an estimated population in all grades of 75-85 examples. Despite the slight damage, this is an extremely attractive representative of an issue that seldom presents a finer market opportunity.
