1854-D $5 MS62 PCGS. Winter 24-R. This coin was struck from the same reverse die that the Dahlonega Mint used to deliver 1853-D Half Eagles of the Winter 23-R die marriage. The 1854-D has an original mintage of 56,143 pieces. In high grades (AU and finer), it is the second most common D-mint Five, but it is still considerably rarer than the '53-D. This is an uncommonly attractive coin for the grade with rich reddish-gold color that deepens to crimson-copper hues around many of the reverse devices. The strike is typical of many '54-D Fives in that the sharply struck centers give way to bluntness of detail over the rims. All major design elements are sufficiently crisp, and the surfaces reveal little in the way of troubling abrasions. Over the past decade, we have offered only one other 1854-D Half Eagle at the MS62 grade level. That coin, which was certified by NGC, was offered as lot 6004 in our January 1996 FUN Signature Sale. According to Winter's 1997 listing, both of these coins qualify for Condition Census standing. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour. Sometimes eBay Premier live bid software cannot keep up with that pace, so we strongly recommend that you place a realistic proxy bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Also please note that all Heritage/CAA lots purchased through eBay Premier carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions.
