1854-D $5 Large D MS61 PCGS. Variety 31-X. This issue, though it rates as one of the most available Dahlonega half eagles, is nonetheless challenging in appealing and properly graded Mint State. The delightful representative offered here would make an excellent addition to one's type or date set of Southern branch mint gold. Unlike most representatives, this piece shows strong detail at the periphery, though Liberty's upper hair shows a measure of softness. Both sides offer lovely luster and vivid orange-gold surfaces. While the fields and devices show scattered, wispy abrasions that preclude a finer grade, the Mint State designation is entirely justified. An attractive and important coin. Population: 10 in 61, 9 finer (8/07).

Coin Engraver: Christian Gobrecht

Shipping: Coins & Currency (view shipping information)
