1854-D $3 Three Dollar Gold XF45 Rim Mounts Removed, Whizzed SEGS. (XF40 Mounts Removed, Whizzed) As with all genuine '54-D Threes, this piece shows weakness on the obverse and the TED in UNITED is doubled. The 1854-D Three Dollar is a famous Dahlonega rarity, being the only D-mint of the denomination and one of just 1,120 pieces struck. As such, it is the object of competition from both collectors of the Three Dollar series as well as Southern gold enthusiasts. From the standpoint of wear, this is a high grade piece for a '54-D and inside the holder there is no visible evidence of the edge damage. However, much of the original surface metal was displaced by the whizzing process, giving the coin an unmistakably unnatural look.
