Cleaned but with enough original surface integrity left to cause bidding excitement from those who realize its potential. The 1854-D is the only instance where Dahlonega struck the $3 denomination. Coins from the single pair of dies used tend to be weak in areas. This expresses itself mainly along the denticles on both sides, but portions of Liberty and the wreath are soft, as though the dies themselves weren't razor-sharp to begin with. Here, it is the mintage that explains much of this coin's rarity: only 1,120 were struck.
