The mintage was a mere 1,120 pieces, and it is the only Three Dollar issue struck at the Dahlonega mint. As such, it is a rare coin that is the subject of ferocious competition among collectors of both the series and the mint. Rarely is the '54-D seen above XF, and a high-end AU coin, such as this one, is the best that most collectors will ever see at auction. This is a totally problem-free example that has no obvious surface blemishes, just light die clashing on each side. Modest wear on the highpoints of the design, and a small number of rather wispy hairlines, in the fields, prevent the piece from receiving a Mint State grade, but the coin's overall attributes are such as to make it worthy of the unofficial "Gem AU" designation. At the present time, only eleven examples of this noteworthy rarity have been graded in Mint State, through the combined efforts of NGC and PCGS, and it seems highly likely that some duplication exists within that number, due to resubmissions. An important offering that is certain to receive serious attention from bidders. </FONT></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE><BR><A name=PricesRealized></A><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" bgColor=#000000 border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%"><TABLE cellSpacing=1 cellPadding=3 width="100%" border=0><TBODY><TR><TD width="100%" bgColor=#79735c><A name=PR><FONT face=arial color=#ffffff size=3><B>Previous Prices from Heritage Auctions</B> </FONT></A></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#f6f6ed><TABLE cellSpacing=0 cellPadding=0 width="100%" border=1><TBODY><TR><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Date</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Service</B></TD><TD align=middle width="33%"><B>Price</B></TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>08/08/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$23,000.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>02/23/2001</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$24,437.50</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>01/08/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">PCGS</TD><TD width="33%">$57,500.00</TD></TR><TR bgColor=whitesmoke><TD width="33%"><B>05/01/1999</B></TD><TD width="33%">NGC</TD><TD width="33%">$36,300.00</TD></TR></TBODY></TABLE></TD></TR><TR><TD bgColor=#ffffff><FONT face=arial size=1 ?>PLEASE NOTE: All prices realized reflect the final hammer price PLUS the buyer's premium in auctions that charge a buyer's premium. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
