1854-D $3 AU55 PCGS.<p>The Three Dollar Gold Piece was first produced in 1854, with high hopes for the denomination despite its close proximity in value with the Quarter Eagle. Demand for the denomination never really materialized, however, and mintages remained only a fraction of that of Half Eagles and Double Eagles. The Dahlonega and New Orleans Mint would only strike the denomination in its inaugural year. The D-mint issue is a famous rarity, as only 1,120 pieces were struck. The great majority of these pieces have since been lost, as gold coins were not collected by mintmark until the next century. Only a handful of Uncirculated pieces are known, choice AU coins are under tremendous demand from Dahlonega Mint specialists. The present example has flashy luster on the legends and devices, and original golden-brown patina. A small planchet flaw (as struck) affects the A in DOLLARS, and there is a faint pinscratch near the denomination. The portrait is nicely preserved. A lovely example of this coveted rarity.
