1854-D[$2 1/2] MS62 PCGS.
1854-D<$2 1/2> MS62 PCGS. Variety 17-M, the only known die pairing. The 1854-D Quarter Eagle is a very desirable issue in any condition and has been for many decades, giving it the status of a "classic rarity" among Dahlonega quarter eagles. Just 1,760 pieces were originally minted, the prime motivating factor in its numismatic fame, and while perhaps not waving the great rarity banner as it once did, the '54-D is nevertheless among the scarcest and most sought-after of all Quarter Eagle issues. It is also a monumental condition rarity, with pieces grading as high as AU50 being the finest most collectors could ever hope to acquire.
Only eight Mint State examples of the '54-D are presently known to exist at both services combined, this piece being the second finest, and bettered by a lone MS64 at NGC. None are higher at PCGS. The strike is exceptionally well executed for the issue, with typical softness showing on the eagle's left leg. All other details, including the denticles, are quite sharp. A hint of yellow-gold patina lends originality to the lustrous surfaces. An area of diagnostic die scratches is seen above star 12, and some (also diagnostic) die polish lines are seen at the rim from star 1 under the date to star 12. Three barely visible milling marks are noted on Liberty's lower jaw, these being the only identifiers worthy of note. Of paramount importance to the gold specialist and near the top of the list of Platinum Night highlights.

Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
