1854-D $2 1/2 MS61 NGC. Winter 17-L. Last sold at public auction in our 2000 Central States Sale with the following description: "The 1854-D Quarter Eagle is a very desirable issue in any condition and has been for many decades, giving it the status of a "classic rarity" among Dahlonega Quarter Eagles. Just 1,760 pieces were originally minted, the prime motivating factor in its numismatic fame, and while perhaps not waving the great rarity banner as it once did, the '54-D is, nevertheless, among the scarcest and most sought-after of all Quarter Eagle issues. It is also a monumental condition rarity, with pieces grading as high as AU 50 being the finest most collectors could ever hope to acquire. This fully lustrous example is well manufactured for an issue that is nearly always found on a poor quality planchet. The surfaces are free from (most) Mint-made defects (a small area above star 12 being the only exception), with only a slight deficiency in strike on the central devices and denticles. Ex: 2000 Central States Sale (HNAI, 5/00), lot 7567, where it realized $23,000. From the Ashland City Collection. Important notice: We expect to be auctioning lots at the rate of 200-250 per hour.
