Variety 17-M. (per Doug Winter's second edition and revised attribution system). Very rare in all grades with an original mintage of only 1,760 pieces. It is believed that only 65-75 pieces are extant today in all grades with a mere 5-6 pieces in Uncirculated. This piece is very well manufactured for an issue that is nearly always found on a poor quality planchet. The surfaces are free of mint-made defects and both sides are overlaid with pleasing, lightly mottled golden pastel colors. A suggestion of reflectiveness can be seen on the obverse. There is no wear or friction noted on the high spots and if the reverse showed a bit more "flash," this piece could have graded a point or two higher. A very desirable coin, regardless of what the "plastic" says it grades, due to its originality and eye appeal. <BR>We are aware of four Mint State 1854-D quarter eagles. These are as follows: <BR>1. Duke's Creek Collection, Ex: Heritage 2/99: 6177; Miller Collection. Graded MS 62 by PCGS. <BR>2. Georgia collection, Ex: Heritage 1999 FUN: 7655, North Georgia Collection. Graded MS 61 by PCGS.<BR>3. This coin, Ex: Chestatee Collection. Graded MS 60 by PCGS. <BR>4. Private collection Ex: David Akers' John Jay Pittman Sale, Part Two (May, 1998): 1781, Abe Kosoff's Melish Sale (April, 1956): 1218. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Since eBay bids are not shown to us until we open the lot on the floor, we treat those bids just like floor bids. In most cases the floor responds before the eBay bid is presented to us, due to Internet lag time, so for consistency we have made it a policy that floor bids are always considered first over tie eBay live bids. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid. </span></font></tr></table></td></tr></table>
