1854-C $5 Weak C AU58 NGC.
1854-C $5 Weak C AU58 NGC. Variety 22-J, Die State II. This is the more frequently seen of the two varieties known of the date as seen by the mintmarked that is impressed much farther to the right than on the I reverse. The 1854-C is the second scarcest C-mint five from the 1850s. Of the hundred or so surviving examples, it is estimated that 19-20 pieces are extant in the various grades of AU. At the AU58 level this piece is just outside the Condition Census. While this is a Weak C variant, the mintmark is clearly discernible to the unaided eye, just weak. This is an obviously original example that has a rich overlay of reddish patina on the obverse and strong, underlying green-gold color on each side. The only mark of any note that could be used as a pedigree identifier is a rim cut near 9 o'clock on the obverse. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
