1854-C $5 MS64 NGC.
1854-C $5 MS64 NGC. Ex: Ashland City. Variety 22-I. The 1854-C is one of the scarcer Charlotte half eagles. It is rated seventh in overall rarity in the series, but a surprising number of high grade examples are known today considering the coin's overall scarcity. This appears to easily be the finest known example. The finest known listed on Winter's most recent Condition Census is a PCGS MS62. Four or five other Mint State coins are believed extant with 19-20 AU pieces known. This particular coin is weakly struck in the centers, as always. However, it is atypical in that it has bright, sparkling mint luster over each side and very few abrasions--quite unlike the heavily marked coins usually encountered. Many examples of this variety also show a weakly defined mintmark. But again, this coin is atypical in that the C is strongly brought up on the lower reverse. Important notice: Heritage usually auctions material at the rate of 200-250 lots per hour. On some occasions eBay Live bid software or the Internet may not be able to keep up with the pace of the auction. We recommend placing a realistic absentee bid now as insurance to avoid disappointment. Occasionally the auctioneer may eliminate or reject an eBay Live bid, and the auctioneer may also reopen a lot after the close of the eBay live bidding (usually because we missed an audience bid), and may reject your bid even if it shows you as the winning bidder. By bidding via eBay Live, you agree that Heritage may award the lot to another bidder at its sole discretion under the circumstances described above or any other reasonable circumstances. Also please note that all Heritage lots purchased through eBay Live carry a 20% Buyer's Premium. Please make sure you read the Terms and Conditions before you bid.
